A few years ago, I learned about this one farm in northern Alaska.

The farmers, a husband and wife duo, are working from the same core beliefs that we are – that organic, locally grown food is where it’s at.

But in their farming pursuits, they must contend with bears – yes, actual black and brown bears – hanging around, eating their crops, and scaring all their employees!

And as if this wasn’t bad enough, they also have moose, a lot of them, in fact, that wreak havoc on their gardens and charge through their fences on the regular.

With these Alaskan farmers top of mind, I want to be the first to admit that what you’re about to read will pale in comparison. But can I be real?

These Henrietta owls can be soooo pesky! They hunt at all hours of the night, and they’re bold – willing to go places you’d never imagine an owl going just to get to a chicken head or, worse, a turkey heart.

We’ve experimented with all sorts of deterrents over the years, none of which involve hurting the owl, by the way. And the strategy we’re leaning into right now – blaring NPR and Christian rock on multiple radios all around the coops – is working wonders!

We can’t get complacent or stick with just one strategy for too long. These owls are smart, and I know they’ll call our bluff if we give them enough opportunity. This is why changing things up must always be part of the defense systems around here.

But this week, we’re doing a happy dance and celebrating almost 2 months without a single owl-related casualty. Hoot Hoot!
